My Favourite Highlighters!

As Summer draws nearer and the weather slowly becomes hotter, I like to go for more of a dewy, glowy look within my makeup. A great way to achieve this is through the use of highlighting and in this post, I thought I'd share with you my favourite highlighters!

Benefit High Beam - £19.50

This is the only liquid highlighter that I own and I really love this one in particular because it has multiple uses. As well as using this highlighter alone, you can mix it with your favourite foundations to give you that beautiful radiant glow. As well as this, you really only need the smallest amount of product each time you use this highlighter so I feel as if this could honestly last for years! This is more on the pinker side as highlighting products go and has this beautiful pearlescent sheen to it. On the skin it looks soft and smooth and it blends effortlessly. This is great for an everyday, natural look. 

The Balm Mary Lou-Manizer - £17.50

You've probably heard a lot about this highlighter in the beauty community. This highlighter is from brand "The Balm" and the product aside, I just love the vintage packaging! This is more of a champagne kind of colour and I feel that this is in particular what makes it so flattering on lighter skin tones. The formula of this product is so fine and smooth and it blends like a dream on the skin. This is a highly pigmented product and you really aren't going to need a lot. It's also multi-purpose and can be used as an eyeshadow, too! This is probably my all time favourite highlighter - it's just that good!

Sleek Face Form Palette in Light - £9.99

This highlighter from Sleek is part of their Face Form palette which also contains a beautiful blush and contour shade. The highlighter is also fairly champagne toned in it's hue but it's not as intensely pigmented in it's shade as Mary Lou-Manizer is. It's very nicely pigmented particularly for a drugstore product and it blends well too. It's quite a shimmery highlight and so a little does go a long way and after having this for quite a while now, I've barely made an indent! I'd definitely recommend this whole palette as the other two products within it are amazing!

MUA Undress Your Skin in Pink Shimmer - £3.00

This is a great little highlighter from MUA - it looks beautiful in the pan and very shimmery - which on the skin, it definitely still is. This has a strong amount of pigmentation for such an affordable product and it applies and blends smoothly to the skin. Be warned however, you can definitely easily use too much of this and look a bit like a disco ball so for this one in particular, less is more! It doesn't last as long for me as the products mentioned above but it does last for a good few hours which I still think is impressive with all things considered.

Liquid Lipsticks

Liquid lipsticks are a product that I've been enjoying for a while now. You get the pigmentation and finish of a lipstick with the ease of application that a gloss can provide you. For these reasons, they've been my go to lipsticks and in the beauty world they're becoming more and more popular.

So, in this post I thought I'd run through some of my personal favourites and tell you what each brand says about them!

MUA's Velvet Luxe Lip Lacquer, £3.00

Building Up Your Makeup Kit / Collection #4 - Highlighter.

Hey guys! In this post I will be continuing my 'Building Up Your Makeup Collection' posts this time moving on to highlighter!

1. Where and Why?

Highlighting is a great way to sculpt and well, highlight the face - it can help to give you a beautiful healthy glow as well as make points on your face look higher and therefore give you a more youthful appearance. It really is an effective and fairly easy addition to a makeup routine that I think makes a real difference to a look.

There are various places on the face you may want to highlight and for these areas you may find different kinds of highlighters work better for each. Places like the brow bone, the bridge of your nose and along the cheekbones are areas most people like to highlight.

2. Formulation and Finish:

Formulation and finish are two things I think you should really consider before purchasing or using a particular highlighting product. One of the main reasons for this is that different products work best for different people and you may therefore find a particular formulation easier to work with. Another reason is that you may find one particular finish a highlighter works a little better in a look than another.

Highlighters just like blushes and foundations come in various different formulations. The most common of these being liquid, cream and powder. You can also purchase highlighters in shimmery, pearlescent and matte finishes - and as I said, these finishes work better depending on the kind of look you are going for.

Cream highlighters come in pot or stick form and these are generally quite easy to work with. Their formulation and the colour of the particular highlight may also make them good primers or eyelid colours as well. Cream highlighters make for a more natural, subtle highlight and are easily to blend and manipulate.

Liquid highlighters are of course a lot thinner in consistency compared to cream blushes and because of this they can be mixed with other liquid products such as your foundation or moisturiser. They can create a beautiful, subtle highlight all over the face and either mixed in with another product or used alone.

Benefit's High Beam is a great liquid highlighter. You can mix this product
with foundation and your moisturiser for an overall facial glow.

Powder highlighters once again can be used as a eyeshadow colour if you so should desire and are generally the formulations with the strongest pigmentation. This means that it's easy to go overboard with then especially if they have a shimmery finish so it's always good to make sure you're not using a heavy hand when working with them.

In terms of finish and when you'd want to use them, it all really depends. Usually, on an eyeshadow look for instance, you'll generally want to use a matte powder highlight or simply something without shimmer in order to not over power the rest of the look - especially if you've already used shimmer. 

If you want a very glowy and summery look however, shimmer is great to give that effect as it makes you look very healthy and youthful - though of course, it's possible to go a little overboard so be wary! For something more subtle, go for something with less shimmery and moving towards more of matte finish.

3. Shade and Skintone:

When highlighting, especially along areas of the face such as the cheeks and nose, you may want to consider the colour of the highlighter you are using. Although the colours of them tend to be sheer on the skin, they do still provide a subtle tint and certain shades are more flattering on certain skin tones.

As a girl who has more of a fairer skin tone, I really enjoy slightly yellow-toned champagne colours and pearly pinks. Peachy and deeper golden tones may work better for those of you who have medium-dark skin!

for all skin tones.

** Concealers can also be used to highlight places such as a under the eyes and the high points of the face (think of the Kim K look). For that, you might want to get a concealer around 2-3 shades lighter than your skin tone! **

Building Your Makeup Kit / Collection #2 - Concealer.

So, this is going to be the second instalment in my series on basic products to have in your starter makeup collection. This particular post is going to be all about concealer, let's get started shall we?

1. Formula:

As with foundation, concealer comes in various different formulas / variations - the most common being cream, liquid and stick concealers. My personal favourites are cream and liquid concealers as I generally tend to prefer the finish and look of them.

Stick or twist up concealers may be something you'd want to look into as they do allow for fairly easy spot application and they are lot less messy compare to other types. This makes them quite handy for on the go and you don't really require any tools for application.

A lot of liquid and cream concealers are easy to work with and this is another reason why I prefer them. They are easy enough to apply and blend nicely because of their formulas and they won't drag or pull at the skin as some stick concealers can. I think there's a better element of control with cream and liquid concealers as well because you can choose yourself exactly how much product you want to use. Generally they also tend to have better coverage which we'll get into in a second...

2. Coverage:

Coverage is something you'll want to think about when purchasing a concealer. You may want a variation of 1 or 2 concealers for different purposes. For instance, for any blemish or acne you may want something a little more high coverage to really conceal them. For minor redness and blemishes something of a light to medium coverage will work well.

Collection's Lasting Perfection Concealer is a cult makeup product
for many. It has a great coverage for a liquid concealer
and it's really affordable too. This makes a really
nice staple concealer for everyday.

I have generally found that cream concealers have the most buildable coverage so these are what I tend to use on spots and more intense blemishes. Liquid concealers are generally a lot lighter (though they can still be buildable and there are some high coverage liquid concealers) and these are nice to use under the eyes and in areas around the face for a brightening effect.

3. Shade & Purpose

Recently, concealers of varying shades have really become popular in the makeup world. Different colours of concealer can help to more efficiently cancel out different kinds of discolouration in the skin - these are referred to as colour correcting concealers. For instance, green can help to cancel out redness and acne blemishes where as pink/peach tones are good for under eye bags and purple tones in the skin.

As well as colour correcting concealers, choosing the colour of your 'normal' concealer is important too. Generaly, you'll want your concealer to be 1-2 shades lighter than you foundation / skin colour. This is because a lighter colour under commonly concealer places like the under eyes makes for a bright, highlighting effect which can really help to minimise the appear of darkness around the eyes and make you look healthier and more awake. 

*Applying this lighter colour concealer on the high points or your face like the bridge of your face and middle of the for heard can also help to give you that nice, bright glowy look*.

Finally, you may want to opt for a shade of concealer that is more or less the same colour as your foundation. This comes in handy when tidying up makeup mistakes or simply to achieve a more polished look. It's great for defining your brow shape as well as tidying up eyeliner and eyeshadow.

REVIEW: Benefit's Hoola Bronzer.

Hey! I've got another review for you all on the blog today and this time it's on Benefit's Hoola Bronzing Powder. This is something I'm pretty sure everyone's heard of because it's constantly raved about... 

Contouring was never something I was really interested in when I first started using makeup, I didn't really understand or see the need of it. However, eventually I became more interested in the process of highlighting and contouring and I realised just what a difference it can make even with the smallest bit of product...

As that interest grew and contouring became an official element in my makeup routine, Hoola was a product that stood out as it was really the only bronzer I'd ever heard such a big praise about. Finally I got it and after having it for a good few months, I have to say I do really like and enjoy using it.

One thing I'm not a fan of though is the packaging, being a higher end product I would have liked something that was perhaps more sturdy and felt a little bit more luxurious. Although mine isn't there yet because the box is made of cardboard, I've seen how worn down the packaging can get and it can end up looking really unattractive. Though it's not the end of the world, for a more expensive product I think it's justified to want better quality packaging to actually protect what is inside. That said, the concept of the packaging is quite cute and I like the way it opens I just wish it were made of something stronger. You do also get a brush with the product but as with most others, I never really use the brushes and prefer to use my own. It's a good addition for travel though and it will get the job done!

The bronzer itself is a soft, mid brown colour with a matte finish on the skin. It's very fine and light enough that it still looks natural on lighter skin tones but build-able for a deeper colour on those with a tan or darker skin. The fact that it looks so natural is one of the things I really enjoy about Hoola because often bronzers can look very harsh and muddy on those of us who have paler skin. This however has just the right amount of pigment and is the perfect shade to achieve a defined yet natural look.

The colour itself is nicely pigmented and really gives you that subtle contoured look as I said before. One of the things I like about the bronzer in particular is that it has multiple uses because it makes a really nice eyeshadow shade, too. It's a great crease colour or even an all over lid colour for a quick and easy look. The bronze blends nicely and it wears very well throughout the day.

There's not a whole lot of product in my opinion despite the box having quite a depth to it. To be honest, the box did kind of make me think I'd get more than I actually did. Despite this, a little bit of it does go fairly far and so I think that makes up for it. It is still on the pricier side at £23.50 which I think is quite a lot for a bronzer - an element that in a rush I would probably end up skipping. However, I do think that this really is a quality product and you can truly see that in the finish and look that the bronzer gives you when applied to the skin. Whether it's worth £23.50 I think is a matter of opinion - yes for those of us who enjoy contouring but perhaps not for someone who is just discovering it or maybe doesn't feel the need to. (If you're looking for a good bronzer to start off with, MUA do a really good one that comes in various shades. I use shade 1 and I really like it).

Overall though, this is a really nice product and I can definitely see why it is raved about. It's multi-purpose and it's build-able for that really natural or really defined look. You can get Benefit's Hoola Bronzer online or from Boots as well as in Department stores such as Debenhams and John Lewis. I got mine from ASOS.

REVIEW: MUA's Mosaic Blusher in 'English Rose'.

Hey guys! I've got a review for you on my blog today and it's going to be on MUA's Mosaic Blush in the shade 'English Rose'.

MUA describes this blush as their 'hero face product' and states that it contains four shades that when blended together, create the perfect natural shade. Upon looking at the product, the blush itself looks interesting and you do get a good amount of product. The main packaging however isn't much to sing about but for such a low price tag from the products in the MUA range, this isn't a big deal.

The blush isn't majorly pigmented on first application with a brush. Although shimmery, it takes at least two applications for me to actually see any colour payoff on the cheeks. As I said, it is shimmery which makes this blush a good highlighter too in my opinion, especially considering it is such a light shade. I'm fairly pale and the fact that this colour is so light tells me that as a blusher, it may not be ideal for those with medium to dark skin tones but would be good used as a highlight instead along the cheek bones.

There is a little bit of fall out which I find is always the case with most shimmer products. This is not too overpowering though and shiny either, it's just enough to give your face a nice glow. After two applications, it does give a nice light pink blush to the cheeks along with a highlighting effect to the face - great for a Summer look.

Overall, I quite like this product. As I said, it shows up on my skin (which isn't the fairest but I am still quite pale) with around 2-3 applications - so in terms of pigment it may be a tricky product for darker skin tones. It might not be for everyone because of the shimmer, but if you're looking for a nice, Summer blush that is natural and will provide you will a healthy glow then I think this might be worth a try.

Makeup of the Day: 20/06/14.

Hey guys, I've got a makeup look for you all today. I thought I'd share this  look I came up with today: it's a shimmery pinky / purple smokey eye and with a nude coral lip. I didn't really know where I was going to go with this look when I was doing it but I quite like how it turned out.

The whole eye look was more or less done with the Sleek i-Divine palette in 'Vintage Romance'. I used the shades Marry in Monte Carloe on the whole lid itself and Honeymoon in Hollywood in the crease. I then used A Vow in Venice and Bliss in Barcelona mixed with Forever in Florence to further deepen the crease and outer eye. Then, right on the middle of the lid I added a little bit of Court in Cannes to add a bit more of dimension to the look. I highlighted with my Sugarpill single eyeshadow in Tako and finished the eye look off with a soft winged liner, a nude liner in my waterline and some of my favourite mascara.

My Top 10 Makeup Products Under £5.

Hey! So, as you may or may not know, I'm somewhat of a bargain hunter. I'm an avid believer that you don't always have to pay large sums of money to get yourself some amazing, quality products. With that in mind, I thought I'd share with you my current favourite beauty bargains under £5 - these are all products that I have tried, tested and use frequently - they are products I would definitely recommend. Without further ado, let's get started:

Collection Lasting Perfection Concealer - £4.19:

This is probably one of the best concealers I've ever tried. It's great for under eyes and highlighting but still has a thick enough coverage to conceal spots and other more intense blemishes. At the same time, it doesn't feel heavy on your skin either. There's not a great selection of shade ranges for those with darker skin tones but if you're fair to medium skinned, this is a really great buy for you.

Collection Cream Puff Lip Creams - £2.99:

There are many high end versions of these matte lip creams out there, but I'd say these are just as good. The Collection Cream Puff's are basically like liquid lipstick in lip gloss-style packaging. They dry matte and last for a really long time. They still have that creamy finish without looking glossy and so they don't leave your lips looking dry and cracked like some matte products can. Again, not the widest of shade ranges but all the colours are nonetheless very natural and perfect for the everyday. The one shade I would not recommend is the nude as I don't find it stays on very well.

Makeup Revolution Lipsticks - £1:

Just like MUA, Makeup Revoltion have lipsticks for just £1. The thing for me that I prefer over the MUA lipsticks (though I still love them) is their range of shades. They have some really beautiful, bold lipstick colours in a range of different finishes. I'm a fan of the bold and bright so this is something I really love about the brand. If you're not that into bright lipsticks however, there's no need to worry - they have some lovely natural, everyday shades to offer as well. Makeup Revolution are a fairly new brand and you can find them at Superdrug - definitely check them out!

Maybelline 24HR Colour Tattoo Cream Eyeshadows - £4.99:

I absolute love this product and it's definitely one of my all time favourite finds. As you know from the name, it is a cream eye shadow - you may think therefore that they will crease or lack in pigment. Wrong! They're actually really nicely pigmented and they do not crease. They make perfect bases for other colours and can act like a primer but honestly, I love using them on their own. The shimmery shades especially have this multi-tonal finish to them and so they look like you've put a lot more work into your eye look than you can actually have. You can apply them easily enough with your finger onto the lid and you're all set! A definite must-have from me.

Maybelline Baby Lips - £2.99:

Incase you weren't apart of the hype of this lip product, I'll explain what it is. Baby Lip's are basically like like chopsticks that are supposed to be mega moisturising and softening. Some of them however come in colours and they are the ones I'm talking about. You have a peach, a pink and a soft rosy red. Whilst I don't really rate the product too much for really making a difference to the condition of my lips, they do make them feel quite soft and they also make them look really moisturised. The shades are actually impressively pigmented as well for a chapstick / lip balm formulation. Because of this, it makes them great for a natural look or an occasion when you don't really want to wear any makeup.

MUA Blushes - £1:

For £1, I wasn't really expect much from the MUA blushes but I was pleasantly suprised. I don't rate the cream blushes much (but then again, I'm not a fan of any cream blush), but their powder blushes are amazing. They are so highly pigmented and at the same time very blend able. There's also a nice shade range - from light pinks, deep pinks to corals and peachy tones.

MUA Bronzing Powder - £1:

I have shade 1 in the MUA bronzing powder's and I'd say it's very comparable to Benefits Hoola on me personally. Both of them provide a natural but still defined look and the MUA bronzer blends really well, too. It's build-able but still natural and for £1 pound, you get a great amount of product.

MUA Mascara - £2:

I am so impressed by this mascara. I have very long lashes that unfortunately do not hold curl very well and instead droop downwards. This mascara is one of very few that actually curl my lashes without them looking clumpy. I've ever tried Benefit's They're Real (which I reviewed here) and I can safely say I prefer this product completely. For that price, you really can't go wrong and I'd urge you to try this mascara!

Rimmel Stay Matte Powder - £2.99:

This is a product raved about by many and in my opinion, rightly so. For me, powder's don't need to be complicated and I don't think they should be pricey. All I need them to do is to keep me matte without looking too powdery and / or cakey. This product does that and it's a bargain of a price, too! Simply put, it's a perfect staple item that I think everyone should try!

Rimmel Scandal Eyes Nude Eyeliner - £3.99:

For me, white eyeliner in the waterline does work for emphasising the eyes and making them look bigger but it's a little to obvious and fake. A nude eyeliner however is a lot less noticeable and really keeps all the focus on what you actually want it to do. It has multiple uses as well as you can use it concealer areas and it can be more of a natural highlight for your brows, too. I really like this particular eyeliner because it's nicely pigmented and actually applies nicely to the waterline despite being an area that can sometimes be wet.

ELF Eyelid Primer - £1.50:

Elf's eyelid primer is widely talked about in the makeup community. It's even compared to Urban Decay's primer potion and I'd say that's a fair comparison. Honestly, I think this primer is as good as any and having tried UD's, I don't see a massive difference at all. For a fraction of the price, I'd say for ELF.

And there you have it; my top 10 favourite makeup products under £5. As I said, I'd strongly recommend all of these products and I really think they are worth giving a go. First Impressions: Makeup Revolution Lipsticks!

Hey guys! So, today I'm doing a first impression post on a couple of lipsticks that I picked up a few weeks ago. These lipsticks are from a relatively new makeup brand called Makeup Revolution. I'd say in terms of price and product range, they are quite comparable to MUA. As far as I know, they too are only available from Superdrug.

Just like MUA, Makeup Revolution sell lipsticks for the amazing price of just £1 - at those prices (and the fact that Superdrug was offering a tempting free delivery on an over £10 spend), I just had to give them a go. I bought four lipsticks in total and I'll go through the shades with some pictures and swatches. What I particularly like about these lipsticks is that they all have names, which is a nice touch and makes them seem a lot more higher end to me.

The first shade I picked up was in Beloved. This is a matte pink lipstick which as far as I can tell has the tiniest bit of shimmer in it as well. It's not as pigmented as it looks in the bullet, but it's still a nice colour on the lips.

Next, I picked up Crime which is a creamy lipstick with a subtle kind of gloss finish. I love this colour personally and i think it's a really nice shade - a sort of hot pink / purple. 

I also picked up Twist which is a really interesting orange / red colour. It has a kind of glossy, metallic finish and it's very pigmented and true to colour.

Finally, I picked up Cheer which is a very shimmery, nude pink colour. It's quite sheer but it's very pretty nonetheless and it would go well a more intense eye look.

Overall, I'm really impressed with the lipsticks from Makeup Revolution and I will definitely be trying more. They're nicely pigmented and come in a range of different finishes to suit every look and every individual. They have a huge shade range which I really like and compared to MUA, they have a much more diverse range of colours on offer. 

I'll be really interested to try some more production from the brand - I'm particularly interested in the Naked Palette dupes. If I were you, I'd definitely give this a brand and their lipsticks a go - for the price you really cannot go wrong.
